Korean Saju Compatibility (Gunghap)

Compatibility in Saju is a description of how two temperaments meet. It is not a verdict on a relationship.

Gunghap (궁합) is one of the most everyday uses of Saju in Korea. It has historically been consulted around marriage, and it is still commonly consulted by couples, families and business partners who simply want a structured way to talk about how they operate together.

What is actually compared

  • The two Day Masters, and how their elements relate — same, generating, or controlling.
  • Whether the two day stems form one of the five classical stem bonds, which is read as strong mutual pull.
  • The two day branches, since the day branch is the seat of the closest relationship. Harmony, clash and punishment between them are all named patterns.
  • Whether each chart supplies the elements the other is short of.
  • Where each person currently sits in their own ten-year cycle — capacity, not affection.

Generating and controlling are not good and bad

When one Day Master generates the other, tradition reads a giving direction: one person tends to supply energy or resources the other builds with. That is warm, and over years it can deplete the giving side without a return channel. When one controls the other, the reading is structure: one person's judgement shapes the other's direction, which steadies as easily as it pressures. Neither is a good or bad match; each describes a different job to be done deliberately.

The honest limit

A chart comparison cannot tell you whether to be with someone, and any service that says a relationship will end is going far beyond the tradition. What Gunghap does usefully is name a dynamic that has never been said out loud — who reaches for the decision, who sees the risk first, where money is likely to cause friction — so it can be arranged rather than argued about.

For business partners

Read through decision-making, money handling and risk tolerance rather than through affinity, chart comparison is a reasonable way to design a role split. It is not due diligence. Put ownership, decision rights and exit terms in writing regardless of what the charts show.
