What Is Korean Saju?
Saju means four pillars. Those four pillars produce eight characters, and those eight characters are the whole subject.
Ask a Korean about fortune-telling and you will rarely be asked for your star sign. You will be asked for four things: the year, month, day and hour you were born. Each of those four units of time is written with a pair of characters — one from a set of ten heavenly stems, one from a set of twelve earthly branches. Four pairs, eight characters. That is Saju Palja, and it is the entire raw material of a reading.
The sexagenary cycle
The ten stems and twelve branches combine into a repeating cycle of sixty. It is used to name years, months, days and two-hour periods, which is why the same vocabulary can describe both a year and an hour. The branches also carry the twelve animals that are more widely known in the West, so the Rat, Ox and Tiger of the zodiac are the branches doing a second job.
The Day Master
Of the eight characters, one represents you: the heavenly stem of your birth day, called the Day Master. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it. Whether a chart is warm or cold, supported or stretched, driven by opportunity or by duty, all of it is a statement about how the other seven characters treat that one.
Yin, Yang and the Five Elements
Every stem and branch carries one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and a polarity, Yang or Yin. The elements generate and control one another in fixed cycles: Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth yields Metal, Metal carries Water, Water grows Wood. Reading a chart largely means asking which of those relationships is crowded, which is missing, and what that does to the Day Master.
Time, not just birth
A Saju chart is not only a snapshot. From the month pillar, a sequence of ten-year periods called Daewoon runs forward or backward through the sexagenary cycle, and each year has its own pillar too. That is what lets Saju talk about timing rather than only about temperament — which decade asks more of you, and which one gives more cover.
What it is not
Saju is not a verdict and it is not scientifically proven. Read honestly, it is a structured way of describing tendency: what tends to come easily to a temperament like yours, what tends to cost you, and when the surrounding conditions are more or less forgiving. What you do with that is not in the chart.
