What Is a Day Master?

In a chart of eight characters, one is you. It is the heavenly stem of your birth day, called the Ilgan or Day Master, and it is the reference point for every other reading in the chart: strengths, wealth patterns, relationships and timing are all descriptions of how the other seven characters relate to this one.

十干The ten Day Masters

• 甲 Gap — Yang Wood, the tall tree: upright, slow to change direction.
• 乙 Eul — Yin Wood, the vine: flexible, persistent, tougher than it looks.
• 丙 Byeong — Yang Fire, the sun: broad, generous, impossible to hide.
• 丁 Jeong — Yin Fire, the lantern: focused warmth at close range.
• 戊 Mu — Yang Earth, the mountain: solid, absorbs pressure, slow to move.
• 己 Gi — Yin Earth, the field: cultivating, detailed, quietly useful.
• 庚 Gyeong — Yang Metal, the axe: decisive, direct, made for action.
• 辛 Sin — Yin Metal, the jewel: precise, discerning, sensitive to quality.
• 壬 Im — Yang Water, the ocean: mobile, expansive, hard to contain.
• 癸 Gye — Yin Water, the dew: perceptive, patient, penetrating rather than forceful.

境Why the same Day Master reads differently

Two people with the same Day Master can have very different charts, because the Day Master's situation is what gets read. A Yin Fire born in the depth of winter, surrounded by Water, is in a different position from a Yin Fire born in summer with Wood feeding it — even though both are 丁.

强Strong and weak

Traditional practice asks whether the Day Master is well-supported or outweighed by the rest of the chart. A supported chart is classically advised to give its surplus somewhere to go; a stretched chart is advised to secure backing before taking on exposure. Be aware that this judgement is interpretive rather than calculated — schools weigh the month branch, the roots and the hidden stems differently, and an honest reading says which weighting it used.
